Welcome to the Ancient Civilization
of
POMPEII
The ancient
city of Pompeii and the volcano, Mt. Vesuvius, are located in southwest
Italy
The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius
occurred on August 24, 79 AD
at 12:00 noon
Interestingly, the 3600 casualties
were not caused by lava flow: they were caused by a heavy pyroclastic
flow that moved at speeds of 50 to 100 miles per hour.
Following the eruption, the city experienced
complete darkness and was eventually buried under 9 feet of ash deposits.
These
plaster casts were made by pouring wet plaster into to "graves" of the
victims.
They depict
exactly how the unsuspecting victims died!
For
many years, Pompeii lay lost beneath the Earth.
Massive
excavation efforts have taken place over the years and are still underway
today.
Scientists
continue to find "buried treasures"
in Pompeii.
